The quest for a phone. Part 1

In roughly less than 24 hours, my contractual commitment to the Verizon Communications network shall end. It has been a good relationship...they care about family plans, clear communication, and leave mail for me on a frequent and consistant basis. But nevertheless I'll be nice again without a wireless provider, free to choose any of the 150 unique cell phones and 10 major wireless companies to my liking. And with that comes the revelation that my current phone is in need of a huge update (See below):

Note the broken back paint peeling at a moments notice...the mangled front screen display which hasn't displayed anything since 2008; and the intangibles such as the battery which has the life of a banana in 100 degree heat, as well as the inappropriately named RAZR for a phone that has never looked so dull.

So thus begins my new quest in order to get a new phone. I started off with the two hottest phones on the market today. The iPhone and the Driod. But which one to choose? And with that, I started asking around for advice on the matter; to better see where the pulse of others are:

Jonathan Song

Phone contract expires in Jan 21st. Question for everyone out there: iPhone or Droid?
Shawn Seiler

iphone.. hands down, iphone. i'm waiting for my contract to end to get one.

Narrae Park

IPHONE!

Stephen Chung

Droid.

Janna Leigh Ryon

iPhone. No question.

Danny Cheung

i work in telecommunications so i'll tell u this. verizon antennas are way stronger than AT&T or any other carrier. i've measured them myself countless times. if u don't care about phone reception, by all means, go with AT&T.

Paul Yun

haven't really had any issues with AT&T

Nancy Short

If iphone would just pick up verizon that would be the best! That's what I'm holding out for.

Praise Hong

what's droid

Sam An

Droid is like the same thing as iPhone, but better phone reception. It doesn't have some features that iPhone has, but eventually, it all evens out & Verizon wins.

Unless you wanna get a crappy phone, believeing the rumor that iPhone is gonna switch to Verizon Christmas 2010.

Rebecca Lee

Apple has not failed you yet. iPhone FTW!

Brian Han

wait for the nexus one

John Kim

flip a coin.
heads-iphone
tails-droid

Grace Swaine

are you a song or not? iphone. done and done.

Perhaps my favorite part of this exchange lie in my sister's comment....who would question my family loyalty based on my phone option. After all, a family that prays together, and has the comforts of Apple based phone, stays together :-)

So why a smartphone? At this point it would be wise to check the motives (aka heap on the guilt) as to why I would need such a device in my life. Am I so self-important to believe that I would need a phone powerful enough to surf the web AND find the location of the nearest Starbucks? Am I such a transient person that I would need to take all of my neccessary applications on the go, including the all important "I am T-Pain" app? Do my insecurities run so deep that I need a device to confirm my place and status in the modern day world?

Such attacks on my selfish, jealous and eNVious nature (Sorry, couldn't resist a phone pun) makes me think of a novel idea: Shouldn't I just go with the most lowest budget phone that I can handle, just to show my defiance against cultural norms and lead an underground movement of people that only have cheap, bottom of the line phones? It would be a direct slap in the face of the culture that encourages excess at every turn! I could be the one that changes the culture for the betterment of people everywhere!

Thus the search began. I knew one thing: The uglier....the better. And the internet did not fail me in this area:

"That's the one!" I thought to myself after seeing the last one. What could possibly be more counter-culture and God glorifyiing against the grain of this world then a phone that looks like a diseased snake???? Quickly I rushed to see how much this would cost.

Are you ready for this? $313,000 dollars.

"French jeweler Boucheron designed a $310,000 cell phone called the Signature Cobra and Vertu is only making 8 of them. The phone has a pear-cut diamond, a round white diamond, two emerald eyes, and four hundred and thirty nine rubies."

Urgh...maybe not so counter-cultural after all. But is there a phone out there that could really be a representation of Romans 12:1-2?

Answer? That comes in tomorrow's segment.........part 2 on it's way!

Note: If you want to help with tomorrow's segment, I'll be going to the mall anywhere from 6-8pm (Time still not fully undetermined) to shop for a new phone. If you want to be a part of this exciting, exhilirating, and life-changing adventure, text me at 443-745-5257 and let me know.
